The Concept

‌The aim of the Smart Vineyard project is to use the new 5G mobile communications infrastructure to establish new possibilities for supporting work in steep/steep vineyards and contribute to the preservation of the ecologically valuable cultural landscape. Technical solutions have so far been limited, particularly in steep-slope viticulture. The work of winegrowers in the vineyard involves considerable additional effort in a dangerous working environment. Overall, the Smart Vineyard project aims to secure jobs in viticulture and tourism and to maintain the economic cycle of the historic vineyard landscape with cultivated steep slopes, which attract numerous tourists to the district.

5G

‌The transmission and evaluation of data between the vineyard and the data center must take place in real time. This timeliness requires very low latency times, which can only be guaranteed by the performance of the 5G mobile network.

KIWI

The aim of the AI-based viticulture information management system (KIWI) is to clearly display all operational data, work processes and key figures relevant to the business so that winegrowers have a daily overview of their facilities and operations.

Robotics

The Smart Vineyard project is developing an initial prototype of a vehicle platform with an alternative ground drive for steep slopes.

Sensor Network

A sensor network including image recognition is planned to be installed in the vineyard, which on the one hand maps the area of use and on the other hand enables the (partially) automatic movement and control of the work of these devices in the steep/steep slope area.

Innovative Viticultural Applications

In order to reduce the working time and costs incurred by winegrowers, the Smart Vineyard project is therefore digitizing and automating basic viticultural applications.

Artificial intelligence

A data center with an intelligent data platform is needed to collect, evaluate and use climatic, ecological and viticultural data in the long term.
